Getting Started with NeuroBrowse

Your guide to setting up API keys and understanding the BYOK (Bring Your Own Keys) model

What is BYOK (Bring Your Own Keys)?

BYOK means you use your own API keys from AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Perplexity. Here's why this matters:

Privacy First: Your API keys are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's secure storage. NeuroBrowse servers never see your keys, your browsing history, or your summaries. Direct browser-to-AI communication only.

Understanding Token Costs

AI models charge based on "tokens" - roughly 750 words = 1000 tokens. When you summarize a webpage, you're charged for the input (webpage content) and output (summary).

Typical Summary Costs

Model Per Summary 100 Summaries/month 500 Summaries/month
Gemini Flash FREE FREE FREE
DeepSeek / Kimi ~$0.0005 ~$0.05 ~$0.25
GPT-4o-mini / Claude Haiku ~$0.001 ~$0.10 ~$0.50
Grok / Perplexity ~$0.001 ~$0.10 ~$0.50

Total Monthly Cost: $5 NeuroBrowse subscription + ~$0.50 API costs = ~$5-6 total

Students: $3 subscription + ~$0.50 API = ~$3.50-4 total

Compare to ChatGPT Plus at $20/month (and it doesn't work on webpages!)

Which Model Should You Use?

Different models excel at different tasks. Here's our recommendation:

Setup Wizard

When you first install NeuroBrowse, our setup wizard will:

  1. Walk you through subscribing ($5/month, or $3/month for students)
  2. Guide you to get API keys (we link directly to each provider)
  3. Securely store your keys locally on your device (never on our servers)
  4. Test each key to make sure it works
  5. Set your preferred default model

Total setup time: 5-10 minutes. Then you're ready to start summarizing!

Managing Your Costs

Each AI provider has a dashboard where you can:

Most users spend less than $1/month on API costs. We recommend setting a $5/month limit when you first start for peace of mind.
